Deciding Which Archery Target to Use
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Defined Tag:

People all around the world practice archery for recreation. The best way to test you skills is the use of an archery target. A different archery target is used for the different types of bows used. It is important to look for targets that are durable and also make it easy to remove the arrows without causing damage to them. They range from three-dimensional animal targets, to the traditional 10-circle design. Choosing which one you should use depends on what type of practice you are doing and what your skill level is.

The most traditional archery target is the 10-circle paper target. They are the cheapest to purchase and can be used by any skill level. This target is usually attached to a bag or a tree and is great for friendly competitions because you can keep score using the rings. Block targets are the most durable targets to use because they make arrow removal easy, are waterproof, and the friction foam design stops the arrow before it passes through to damage the target.

People who are more skilled and want a more challenging archery target can get a three-dimensional animal to practice on. They are made with a foam core so that they will withstand the impact of the arrows and not wear out easily. With these you can practice your accuracy in hitting the target vital areas. You can get a variety of different animals such as deer and bears that will give you an idea of how well you would be skilled in a hunting environment. Although bow hunting is illegal in most countries, people all around the world still use animal targets for advanced practicing.

Choosing the right archery target for your skill level is the best way to advance gradually and effectively. For beginners, easier targets are more practical to learn with. As your skill gets better and the easy target is becoming less challenging, you should then move up to something more difficult.
